Music Videos Rule the Roost!
Out of the top-50 videos on YouTube based on viewership, 37 are music videos, which is not surprising!
According to the report Music became even more valuable on YouTube in 2019 by Pex, a digital rights technology company, although Music videos constitute only 5 percent of YouTube, they account for 22 percent of all views.
Is 2014 the Blockbuster Year on YouTube?
Another interesting fact is that all 16 years of YouTube’s existence do not find a representation on the list of top-50 most viewed videos.
In fact, there is not a single video from 10 out of those 16 years, including the years 2019, 2020, and 2021.
The highest number of videos are from 2014 – 11 videos!
Of the remaining videos, 2007 and 2009 have one video each, 2010 has 2 videos, 2012 and 2013 have 3 videos each, 2015 and 2016 have 7 each, 2016 has 6 videos and 2018 has 9 videos.
Oldest Video on the List is from 2007!
The oldest video on the list is The Gummy Bear Song – Long English Version, released in 2007, just two years following the launch of YouTube!
It is the oldest archetype of viral YouTube videos and exemplifies how YouTube can boost a video’s reach if it is “catchy” enough. The video is 39th on the list of 50 most-viewed videos on YouTube.
A critic noted about the music video when it was released in 2007, “He wears yellow undies, shows his crack, delivers peppy techno tunes in a multitude of languages – he’s the ultimate cross-platform, cross-cultural phenomenon YouTube was designed to unleash.”
An interesting story behind the song by its creator can be read here – Story behind the ‘Gummy Bear Song’.
Scroll down for some more trivia on the YouTube toppers!
