As countless BBQs and firework displays have come to an end, there is one element of the July 4th Independence Day celebrations that are still stuck in our heads.
The Music We Heard.
So which artists and songs were on the top of everyone’s mind? Let’s take a look at the Top 5 using YouTube Music Charts, a free tool from VideoAmigo. We’ve categorized 32,000 music channels (and counting) that account for over three Trillion individual video views.
To filter this gigantic category down to the Top 5 artists we first filter by the week narrowing our data to July 1 – July 7. Next, we filter by geographic location to the United States, and finally, we rank all of the remaining channels by views gained in the week.

Marshmello, Billie Eilish VEVO, and Post Malone VEVO were the most viewed artist channels of the week. The above charts show channel data, we decided to dig a little deeper to determine what songs (videos) were keeping the parties going.
Marshmello released a new album on July 3rd. On the same day, he uploaded a video for each song on the album to YouTube using a “360-degree” VR music video format. Very cool.
Our Grade: 🎤 (1 out of 4)
Those videos combined for just over 3.2 Million views (or 5%) of the total views Marshmello gained over the Holiday week. His top videos (pictured below) remain his older hits. This means views he was getting were on older content and his new launch wasn’t much of a factor. If you heard Marshmello at your BBQ it was an old classic.
Artist: Billie Eilish
The same can be said of Billie Eilish who gained nearly as many views as Marshmello, without uploading anything new at all.
Result: 🎤🎤(2 out of 4)
If you heard Billie Eilish you probably heard “bad guy”. This was the hit that brought her into the mainstream back in March and continues to rack up views (sitting at nearly 360 Million).
Spotify’s US Top 50 Chart corroborates the song’s staying power showing it at #7 in daily plays in the US despite being released over three months ago.
Artist: Post Malone
This brings us to the #3 on YouTube Music Charts and #1 on the Spotify chart…Post Malone. Your favorite face tatted rapper released a new single just in time for the weekend. The release was accompanied by three YouTube uploads. First, the official “Rated R” music video for “Goodbyes” featuring Young Thug on July 5th, and then a PG version of the same video, and a video of the new songs’ lyrics w/sound.
Result: 🎤🎤🎤 (3 out of 4)
Note: Post Malone has only achieved three microphone ranking. To earn a four of four ranking, his library of old content would have driven enough views for him to have gained more total views in the week than Marshmello or Billie Eilish.
The first “Rated R” version of video shot up to 21 Million views over the weekend. This is significant because:
- Post Malone’s new content made up nearly HALF of the views he gained in the week overall. Something the other top artists cannot claim.
- This also puts him at more views per video than Marshmello for videos uploaded in the week.
- The popularity of the video on YouTube may have driven interest in the song overall and increased daily plays on Spotify.
It looks like when it comes to the new material, Post had the competition beat, but there is a high probability you heard one if not all three of these artists over the long weekend.
